The minimum mandatory requirements for the energy efficiency of refrigeration equipment are determined by Directive 2009/125/EC.

Any chiller placed on the market after the date a directive comes into force is required to be compliant. The next stage of the EcoDesign legislation comes into effect on the 1st January 2018 and is more demanding than previous efficiency requirements. EU member states permit surveillance, which in the UK is administered by the National Measurement and Regulation Office.
